Some say there is a veil between the living and those who have left the physical world. Others see that those who have left the body still walk among us. Either way, interaction with the spirit world is meant to be a personal choice and spirits should not intrude on your sense of peace and well being.
Most people who talk of experience with spirits or ghosts relate them with a recent death of a loved one. Hearing a voice, smelling familiar perfume, sightings in dreams, or passing mirrored reflections are commonly reported incidents. It seems that after a loss, people are more willing or receptive to sensing those they love. Missing someones presence can open lines of communication that lie indistinguishable in the day-to-day routine.
I am not one to convince others about the "truth" of spirit communication. It either makes sense as a possibility or it doesn't. For those of us who have experiences that make it real, or for those who think they've had an encounter, this is one of my favorite subjects to discuss.
In my reality, spirits are always around us. Much of the time they remain undetected to the untrained or unwilling eye. For those interested, it takes little discipline to make contact. The spirits walking beside us are eager to connect, to assist and to communicate. That said, they can be overzealous in their approach and don't always interact with appropriate timing or method.
Recently, I worked with a family who was experiencing odd and sometimes uncomfortable interactions with active and excitable entities in their home. They'd felt an amicable presence most of the years they'd lived in this home but the tone and energy of the presence had begun to change.
On my visit to the house, I met one soul who'd had a longstanding attachment to the land on which the house was built. This was the older, familiar and comfortable spirit. The new one, a wandering and lost sort of fellow, was passing through, seeking the family of his youth who had long since left the neighborhood. His energy felt anxious and distressed and was the new, intrusive presence the family was feeling. Because the first spirit was a "helper" kind of a guy, he offered to accompany the second one on his journey and they both left the house quickly and willingly.
After a couple of weeks, I received an image of the house and a new presence of spirits passing through during a meditation. When I asked my guides about this, they showed me a portal in the home. As if on cue the next day, the woman called and described these new visitors. We talked about the portal and scheduled a time for me to return and close it.
A portal is an opening or a doorway through which spirits easily pass from their world to ours. Encounters with these spirits are as wide and varied as they would be in a busy train station, personalities ranging from friendly to frantic, from passive to agitated. These are spirits are passing through and rarely have a direct relationship or connection to those who live nearby. Because of the open passageway, there is no regulating the types of entities who pass through so the best approach in a home is to close the portal. This is a a fairly simple process in most situations.
After I worked with the homeowners to close the portal and walked through to clear residual energy in the rooms of the home, we discussed the future prospect of connecting with the spirit world, specifically family members, guardian angels, and guides. Closing a portal will not shut down the prospect of continued guidance from the other side. It merely closes the flow of "stranger" entities who are just passing through and who can stir up a lot of unnecessary energy.
Connecting with our spirit guides is always possible. The best way to make it comfortable and feeling safe is to clearly request how the information is passed and under what conditions. Those of you who have worked with me and who have heard me speak of this know that I'm big on posting "office hours" with the spirits. Choose a time, place, situation and let them know you're available then to communicate. Choose symbols or signals for different ancestors in order to identify them when they show up. And then allow yourself to open to anything that flows through. Be cautious about labeling the information as ridiculous or impossible. Remember, this is insight from those without the "reality" of the human form and just about anything can be real for them. Follow up with a sign of gratitude, a simple thank you normally will suffice but develop your own code and symbolism to enhance the experience.
Deceased loved ones and spirit guides are enthusiastic about serving human beings and are willing to work with you in any way you like. They are also cooperative when you choose to not have the interaction. (A "closed" sign on your psychic door works quite well.)
